Settings drift. Updates reset them, children discover workarounds, and a control you set up months ago may quietly be off. A calm re-check every so often keeps things where you left them.
Confirm the controls are still active
Open the tool you set up and check it is still switched on and still covering the right accounts.
- iPhone: Screen Time is on, with a passcode only you know, and Family Sharing still lists your child
- Android: Family Link is still linked and its limits are active
- Consoles: the family settings on PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch are still applied to your child’s profile
Glance at the usage data
Most of these tools show how much each app is used. You are not policing every minute. You are just looking for anything that does not add up.
Worth a question. If a screen-time report suddenly drops to near zero, it can simply mean a quiet week, or it can mean use has moved to another device or a control was switched off. Either way, it is worth a calm ask.
Ask, do not accuse
If something looks off, lead with curiosity: « I noticed the limit came off, do you know what happened? » Children work around controls for ordinary reasons, and an honest answer is more useful than a locked-down device.
Reassurance. Controls buying a bit of time is exactly their job. The check-in matters more than any single setting, and a two-minute look now and then is plenty.
