One rule above all
Never send money, hand over your card details, or put cash into an investment on the word of someone you have only met online. Not for an emergency, not for a « sure thing », not just this once. This single rule stops the great majority of these scams cold.
Insist on a live video call early
Ask to see the person on a live video call, and do it early, before feelings run deep. Someone who is always too busy, always has a broken camera, or always reschedules is showing you a pattern. A real person who wants a real relationship will happily say hello on video.
Slow down when you are being rushed
Urgency is the scammer’s main tool. A crisis that needs money tonight, an investment window closing in an hour, a fee that must be paid right now. Treat pressure to act fast as a reason to stop, not to hurry.
