Social apps are built to be open by default, so a few quick checks make a real difference. Do them together and explain the why behind each one, because a child who understands a setting is more likely to keep it.
The core checks
- The account is set to private, so only approved followers see posts
- Message requests from people they do not follow are turned off
- Location sharing is off, and location is not tagged on posts
- Their profile does not show their full name, age, or school
Review who follows them
Scroll through the follower list together. Ask, gently, « do you actually know this person? » It is normal to find accounts they cannot place. Removing or blocking those is quick, and doing it with you makes it feel routine rather than dramatic.
Explain why each one matters
A private account keeps strangers from collecting photos and details. Turning off message requests closes the most common way strangers start a conversation. Location off means a post does not quietly reveal where they are right now.
Tip. Each app keeps these under its own privacy settings. If a menu has moved, search the app’s help for « private account » or « message requests. »
Reassurance. You are not spying by doing this together. You are teaching a habit your child will carry to every new app they join.
