Verify before you act

THE DEEPFAKES SET

Technology can now copy a familiar face and voice well enough to fool you for a few crucial seconds. The fix is not a gadget. It is a simple rule you agree in advance and keep.

Why a familiar voice is no longer proof

Deepfakes and voice clones are tools that recreate how a specific person looks or sounds. With only a short sample from a video or voicemail, a scammer can make a voice that seems to be your child, your boss, or your bank calling in a panic. So the old test, « it sounded just like them », does not hold any more.

The shift. Recognising a voice or face used to be enough. Now treat any urgent request that arrives by call or message as unconfirmed until you have checked it another way.

Agree a verify-first rule

Make yourself one plain promise: before you pay money or share anything sensitive because of an urgent call or message, you hang up and call the person back on a number you already have. Not a number they give you in the moment. A number already saved in your phone or printed on your card.

  1. Get an urgent request to pay or share something.
  2. Do not act on the spot, no matter how real or how frightening it sounds.
  3. Hang up and call the person or organisation on a number you already trust.
  4. Only continue once they confirm the request themselves.

Set a family safe word

Agree a simple word or question with the people close to you, something an outsider would not know. If a call claims to be a relative in trouble, you can ask for the safe word. A real family member will know it. A cloned voice will not.

Under pressure right now? If a caller insists you must pay this second and forbids you from checking, that pressure is the clearest sign of a scam. Stop, and call back on a trusted number before you move any money.
Reassurance. You do not have to tell a real voice from a fake one. You just have to call back. That one habit defeats the trick no matter how convincing it sounds.
